U.S. Justice Department Seeks to Deny TikTok's Request to Delay Injunction
U.S. Department of Justice Seeks to Dismiss TikTok's Request to Postpone Injunction
On December 12, the U.S. Department of Justice asked the Court of Appeals to dismiss an emergency motion filed by TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, that seeks to delay the effective date of a law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok by January 19, 2025. It is understood that TikTok and ByteDance filed the motion with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in an attempt to buy more time while waiting for the Supreme Court to hear the case. The companies emphasized that if the injunction goes into effect as planned, TikTok, an app with more than 170 million monthly US users, will not be able to continue to operate. They also argued that delaying the law's implementation could provide time for the incoming administration to reassess its policies, especially with President-elect Donald Trump likely to take a more lenient stance.
